- High Season, the weather is hot and the hotels and main beaches fill
up fast. Don't worry there are numerous smaller hotels and many secluded
beaches if your not into crowds. Why not take a short trip to one of the
smaller islands surrounding Phuket (my hot tip is Raya Island only one
hour away by boat). Scuba diving visibility can be changeable with
easterly currents bringing in plankton, the up side is this also brings
in the Whale Sharks and Manta Rays for their annual holiday.
February - High Season, The weather is very hot with little if any rain. A good time to travel around and see some of the sites outside of Phuket. Take a day trip to Phang Nga Province (1 hour away) and visit the famous limestone cliffs 'James Bond Island' made famous in 'The Man with the Golden Gun' is a must see, especially when visited on a traditional Thai long tailed boat. Visibility has cleared up for Scuba divers and the coral reefs around Phuket are some of the best in the world. March - High Season, This is usually the hottest month so don't forget the sun screen. 23rd, my Birthday, big...big...big party free food and when I get drunk free drinks as well! For a day away from the beaches (and to recover from those late nights) why not try one of the many herbal saunas which tend to be at the back of Patong on Nanai Road. April - Mid Season, Still hot and on the 12th it's Songran, if you've never seen it you wouldn't believe it. The world's biggest water fight to celebrate Thai new year. It lasts all day and all night, don't wear your best clothes May - Mid Season, heading towards the rainy season means more cloud and occasional days of rain. Hotel costs fall sometimes to half of the high season rate so bargains are available. Many return holiday makers book hotel rooms on arrival to take advantage of the low rates. June - Low Season, Low season means the chances of rain are higher. Not to worry too much as rain tends to come in the late afternoon and is a refreshing change to the heat of the mornings. Sun worshipers should rise early and take advantage of the usual morning sunshine. July - Low Season, Rainy Season? well, not this year although there were days of bad weather it ended up as one of the hotter months with everyone taking advantage of the low prices and great days on the beach. Even if the weather turns bad there is still plenty to do with 10 pin bowling, herbal saunas and of course great shopping bargains. Fakes abound but the major shopping outlets sell real designer goods at low low prices. August - Low Season, Monsoon time in Asia but Phuket usually escapes with the tail end of the bad weather from the South China Sea. The hotel and tour rates are at their lowest with only a 50% chance of overcast or rainy skies, many long term visitors prefer the more relaxed pace and un-crowded beaches. September - Mid Season, monsoons are always hanging around in South East Asia, however, they rarely center over Thailand and although rain will come it usually only lasts for part of a day with good sunshine the rest of the time. October - Mid Season, the weather's getting much better with little chance of rain. This is the month of the vegetarian festival with daily processions of the faithful who pierce their faces and bodies with hooks and poles constructing elaborate head gear. Many people refuse to eat meat for duration of the festival, but that doesn't mean you have to join in. November - High Season, Hot weather and one of the best months to visit the island. The crowds are not here yet and the beaches are busy but not full. Scuba diving visibility is good and day trips to the surrounding uninhabited islands provide great diving and snorkeling opportunities. December - High Season, Hot Hot weather and plenty of tourists. Although most Thai people are Buddhist we always know a good party when we see one Christmas and New Year are always fun and everyone joins in the giving and receiving of presents. Don't worry if you still crave that traditional Christmas feast, there are numerous Australian and European restaurants that can provide a Turkey with all the trimmings. Of course lobster, oysters and huge tiger prawns are always available for those with a more tropical taste. |
